When it arrived for 1984 it did something radical for a serious off-roader: it ditched the traditional body-on-frame layout for a light, stiff unibody design Jeep called UniFrame, making it car-easy to live with and still tough enough to climb a mountain. Seventeen years and barely a styling change later, it was still selling.
The heart of the thing is the AMC 4.0-liter inline-six, which landed in 1987 and grew into the 190-horsepower High Output version from 1991. It's one of the great do-anything engines, famous for shrugging off neglect and running past 250,000 miles while making a gruff, industrial hum that no modern six can fake.
Two honest warnings for shoppers. The 2000-2001 cars got the notorious "0331" cylinder head that likes to crack between cylinders three and four, and every XJ everywhere is quietly turning to iron oxide, so check the floors, rockers, and rear quarters hard. Find a rust-free one, ideally a pre-2000 4.0 with the desirable trims, and you've got the cheapest ticket into genuine go-anywhere capability that the car world offers.
